lyrics

Sometimes I wish that I was moderately rich
And had a house of my own
I’d be a liar if I denied it
Material things give you control

A middle class existence
With an eye for all that’s good
A middle class existence
With it’s baggage, connections, and social codes

I’ve seen the daughters and the sons
Well-spoken boredom, easy it comes
How I dream to be those ones
Or at least with those circumstances

I don’t wanna loose what my past is
But the strangest things happen to men
Who want more than they have
And I want to be middle class

Sometimes I wish I’d never seen them
When I left the gate of my old school
They hold the key above me
Privately educated, nauseatingly sympathetic wealthy liberals

But I can’t describe my encompassing sense of disappointment
When I meet the subject of my awe
That lucky girl, whose father and mother were both singers
And successful, and well known

But she flirts with ‘revolutionaries’
That she thinks will make her so free
But they’re just as tied up as her
In their perennial contradiction of spurning money
Yet having so much more that it hurts

The lazy nods to anarchism, environmentalism, scepticism
They wanna change the world we live in
But don’t they see
That their wealth and choice comes from that system?

I’ve seen the daughters and the sons
Well-spoken boredom, easy it comes
How I dream to be those ones
Or at least in those circumstances

I don’t wanna loose what my past is
I don’t wanna take any chances
I wanna be a complete bastard
With a sunny-side outlook
And a nice matching outfit
And a Cath Kidson giftbag
Then no more then will I have
Inferiority
